One will not be surprised to hear that cattle rearing has been an integral part of societies since ancient times. But how big was the practice. Kautilya notes in his Arthashastra, that it was the second biggest activity in the economy, next only to agriculture.
Of course, cows were not the only animals that were raised. Different animals were nurtured for different purposes, as is mentioned.
"Cattle-rearing was the second most important economic activity. Cows and she-buffaloes were reared for milk and the bulls and he-buffaloes were used as draught animals. Other useful domesticated animals mentioned in the text are: sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, camels and pigs."
