On Dharma | Sutras of Chanakya - 89

अर्थमूलौ धर्मकामौ।

The root of Dharma (religious belief) and Kama (satiation of desires) is Artha (some positive gain)

Normally Artha in Sanskrit means meaning or purpose but Chanakya’s view was the Artha meant gain of any kind and not only financial gain.

That is why his famous treatise on the Statecraft is titled ‘Arthashastra’, for Chanakya believed that every activity of a state should be aimed to get benefit for the kingdom: be it social, financial and even spiritual.

In this Sutra’s context also, spiritual gain is the root of all religious practices and gain of physical satisfaction is the root of all desires.
