With rise in global temperatures and the risk of irreversible environmental conditions, we are faced with a difficult question. How do we live sustainably?
This seems to be of interest even in the days of the past. Vasista, mentions the importance of living in harmony with nature. With industrial scale agriculture taking precedence, we are witness to large scale deforestation taking place, in order to accommodate animal farms and for other commercial means.
A person is not supposed to cut trees which provide fruits and flowers. They are however only allowed in the case of using directly in cultivation, in the form of tools, as well as for household needs.
Taking a leaf out of this sutra, we need to work towards a world where we have planned and regulated removal of trees, which are replaced beforehand or will be replaced in the shortest time possible.
A man should not damage trees that produce flowers and fruits. One may cut them down to make implements for cultivation or for household needs.
